Almost all people do experience low back pain once in their lives and spinal stenosis in the lower back is the most common cause for lower back pain. As one advances in age, the spine also changes. With the constant tear and wear brought about by aging, this can actually result to the spinal canal getting narrowed. This back problem is known as spinal Stenosis.
What are the Symptoms of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?
Lower Back pain. Individuals who have lumbar spinal Stenosis might or might not experience lower back pain. It depends on the severity of the arthritis that develops.
Sciatica. As discussed in other articles, sciatica is not really a condition but more of a symptom of other back condition. Pain is often described as a burning feeling which usually begins in the buttocks and spreads down to the leg. This pain in the leg is what they call as sciatica and as it progress, pain can also reach the foot.
Tingling sensation or numbness of legs or buttocks. Increase in the pressure in the nerves can lead to tingling sensation and numbness which is often accompanied by burning pain. However not all patients suffering from spinal Stenosis in the lower back experience this.
Foot drop. When the pressure of the nerve is at its critical level then weakness may result in one leg or in some case both legs are affected. This is when some patients experience foot drop or that feeling of slapping of foot in the ground while you walk.
Reduce pain when sitting or leaning forward. The probable reason why leaning forward eases pain is because the lower back spine when leaning forward actually gives the nerves more space. That is why a lot of individual who suffers from lumbar spinal Stenosis find relief when sitting or leaning forward. The pain usually gets worst when standing or walking for a long time.
In some cases, these symptoms maybe very severe or at times less severe. Other people may not even know they have it for they do not experience any symptoms at all. However if you ever experience any of the symptoms above, it is better for you to consult your doctor.
